Reports: Mathis Considering Ravens Offer

The Ravens reportedly hosted free-agent guard Evan Mathis for two days at their team facility and took him out to dinner Thursday night.

Now Mathis says he has received an offer and is mulling it over.

Ravens have offered a nice deal. I’m flying back to Arizona to think about it and discuss it with my family,” Mathis told XMSirius Radio’s Adam Caplan.

The Ravens have lost four players to free agency already, including starting left guard Ben Grubbs to the New Orleans Saints on Thursday. Anticipating his departure, the Ravens were already reportedly in talks with Mathis when Grubbs signed.

The 6-foot-5, 302-pounder is considered the top guard remaining on the market, but the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in retaining the agent Drew Rosenhaus client.

“We’d like Evan back and we’re in constant communication with his representatives,” Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman said, according to the News Journal.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer says the Eagles have made a competitive offer and don’t know which way Mathis will go.

Ravens fullback Vonta Leach did a little recruiting via Twitter, saying, “come on and [join] the family.”

Mathis, 30, was a full-time starter last year for Philadelphia. According to Stats Inc., he did not allow a sack the entire season and hasn’t surrendered one since 2006.

Mathis didn’t have any false start penalties and just one holding call against him last season. He was part of a mobile Eagles offensive line that helped pave the way for the NFL’s fifth-leading rushing attack (142.2 yards per game).

Working in that style of running could make Mathis a good fit in the Ravens’ scheme.

The former third-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2005 is also familiar with the AFC North’s physical style of play. He spent two full seasons and part of a third in Cincinnati, where he started seven games. He also spent one year in Miami.

Mathis has a connection with Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome. Both are Alabama alumni. Mathis told WNST that he considers Newsome a very good family friend.

“I would love to play for a guy like Ozzie,” Mathis said. “If I didn’t want to play for him, I wouldn’t be taking the visit. I like what the Ravens do, I like what Ozzie has always done.”

Grubbs, a former first-round pick of the Ravens and first-time Pro Bowler last year, was known as an athletic guard. Two inches taller and about eight pounds lighter, Mathis is quite the specimen as well, as can be seen in the video below.
